People live in suburbs-so what?
Start with a suburban home, add one egomaniacal American artist, add a dash of poor planning and there you go-a silly mishap at the Venice biennale! Mike Bouchet’s contribution to the 2009 Venice biennale was a full-sized American suburban home, which was supposed to float in a canal for 3 months. Unfortunately during installation the house sank, leaving only the roof above water. Now, I know this part was unintentional, but looking a this house fully submerged in water it’s hard to escape the Katrina reference. Which only makes this Bouchet character look like more of d-bag, since in his interview he says, “now I know why there aren’t more houses like this floating” Hmmm maybe its because its lame and incredibly insensitive to criticize the sameness of the suburbs during a recession and housing crisis. Not to mention the fact that there are families in New Orleans still living in FEMA trailers 4 years ofter Katrina because they still don’t have homes. But why am I expecting socially conscious art from a man who’s past work include a room full of mini Tom Cruise head sculptures (which he outsourced to Mexico) and a New York gallery filled with 75,000lbs of dirt and human feces?
